Cavendish Bridge also known as ‘Pont la Ville Noire’ is the only route that links Ville Noire and Mahebourg. The bridge is named after the then governor Sir Charles Cavendish Boyle who was the 19th Governor of Mauritius from 1904 to 1911. The Bridge began construction in 1908 and lasted around 3 years. The concrete bridge was constructed at that time beside the then wooden bridge. The latter was being used till the concrete bridge construction ended. The bridge is approximately 200 m long with a 6.1 m wide carriageway and 1.25 m wide footway on each side of the carriageway.
It is said that Cavendish is the longest bridge in the Republic of Mauritius. Cavendish Bridge was among the first bridges to be using a concrete construction instead of being fully stoned. Sir Charles Cavendish Boyle designed the bridge similar to the London bridge of Lake Havasu city. In 2011, the bridge undertook renovation works by making the aim of preserving this historical site as well as embellishing it as Mahebourg is a tourist Village with many other historical sites. I, as a resident of Ville-Noire, use this bridge daily as I had mentioned above that it is the only route that links Ville-Noire and Mahebourg.
